Myanmar Craftsman Ko Cho Making Guitars

Myanmar craftsman Ko Cho has been making guitars at his home on the outskirts of Yangon for nearly two decades. Today, most of his guitars are built from mahogany, which was found strewn across the city after Cyclone Nargis hit the region in 2008. He said using this naturally-fallen wood meant he was creating for "remembrance", referring to the estimated 138,000 people who died during the storm that ravished the country.
Even in my dreams, I think about making guitars.

Philippine Grandmothers Bringing Light

A group of grandmothers in the rural Philippines are being hailed for bringing light to their community. They have trained as engineers and are now able to provide homes in their village with solar powered energy.
The thinking is, Empowering women will eventually empower a community.

Like Montreal, Like Brussels

Joe Ollmann, a Doug Wright Award-winning cartoonist, plays himself live and in his cheekily sketched world to expose the fish-out-of-water comedic anxieties of an Anglophone struggling to make himself understood in Francophone Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood.
On occasion I'll come across an article, a blog, or, in this case, an animation short that takes a decidedly humorous, albeit sardonic look at how visitors fit in, or don't fit in, in their new city.  Several years ago the Regional Vice President of a consulting firm I used to work for offered me a transfer from our Chicago to our Brussels office.  But after much consideration I declined it, and one reason was the challenge I anticipated in adapting to a French culture.  My family and I would've had a hell of time fitting in.

From Old Vancouver to New Vancouver

A portrait of Vancouver through Fred Herzog's photographs, reflecting on the life, architecture, and history of the city's streets and neighbourhoods.
Tony Wilson composes a soundtrack that, to me, lends an surreal air to this city portrait.  It is as if we viewers and visitors were dispassionate and time-warped, and the hustle and bustle of Vancouver were reduced to murmuring and slow motion.

From Old Toronto to New Toronto

Kwan Ho Tse and Robert Crossman animate old Toronto, and imagine decades speeding by like ghostly cars to bring it to new Toronto.  They draw on Johann Sebastian Bach to add a tone of majesty.

Memories and Music of Ireland

Mick Moloney, the Irish-American musician, author and professor, talks Irish music and his beloved tenor banjo during a rehearsal with musician Athena Tergis at his Greenwich Village apartment.
Sometimes the journey we embark on is that of memories and music, but it inevitably brings us back to our heritage.

Zeng Fanzhi in Art Basel Hong Kong

I miss art exhibitions and museums, so perhaps I will amble over to the Art Institute of Chicago and Museum of Contemporary Art when I visit home in a few weeks.

Zeng Fanzhi

My ears perked up when I heard Zeng Fanzhi as the most valuable Chinese artist.  Three years ago I had to forgo my intense effort to deal with fine art masterpieces, because I needed to take a more strategic approach to building my clientele and catering to their interests.  But that effort is just sitting in the wings, and I will resurrect it at the proper time and in the proper context.
